The educational objectives of the Geophysical Engineering Program are a direct outgrowth of the mission and goals of Colorado School of Mines. The Geophysical Engineering program is dedicated to educating students and professionals in applied geophysical science and engineering who will apply themselves in the discovery and recovery of the Earth’s resources, their conversion to materials and energy, their utilization in advanced processes and products, and the economic and social systems necessary to ensure their prudent a provident use in a sustainable global society.

Students should have taken 4 units of English, 2 units of algebra, 1 unit of geometry, 1 unit of advanced, Mathematics (trigonometry), 3 units of history or social studies, 3 units of lab science (1 unit must be chemistry or physics), 2 units of academic electives. Trigonometry is the minimum math requirement; however, students should complete pre-calculus or calculus if they have the opportunity to do so. Students should rank in the upper one-third of their high school class and have strong ACT or SAT scores. SAT with writing or the ACT with or without the optional writing test is accepted. Average GPA 3.7/4.0, Average SAT (Critical Reading and Math) 1260, Average ACT Composite 28 is required.

Colorado School of Mines is a public research university devoted to engineering and applied science. It has the highest admissions standards of any public university in Colorado and among the highest of any public university in the U.S. Mines has distinguished itself by developing a curriculum and research program geared towards responsible stewardship of the earth and its resources. In addition to strong education and research programs in traditional fields of science and engineering, Mines is one of a very few institutions in the world having broad expertise in resource exploration, extraction, production and utilization. Since its founding in 1874, the translation of the school's mission into educational programs has been influenced by the needs of society. Those needs are now focused more clearly than ever before. The apartment at Mines Park is an apartment complex that was built to provide convenient, affordable housing for the expanding Mines community. The complex was built in three different phases and has two apartments for both single students and families. There are one, two and three bedroom units for single students, and one and two bedroom units for families. The apartments are unfurnished. The kitchen is equipped with a full size refrigerator, dishwasher and an oven and range. Each bedroom has a hook up for expanded basic cable television and wired or wireless connection to the Mines network. There are two community centers at Mines Park. Both feature laundry facilities, television lounge, study area and a kitchen. A Convenience Store is featured at one of the community centers.
