The Department of Mathematics at the Courant Institute offers balanced training in mathematics and applications of mathematics in the broadest sense. The Department occupies a leading position in analysis and applied mathematics, including partial differential equations, differential geometry, dynamical systems, probability and stochastic processes, scientific computation, mathematical physics, and fluid dynamics. A special feature of the Institute is its highly interdisciplinary character - with courses, seminars, and active research collaborations in areas such as financial mathematics, materials science, visual neural science, atmosphere/ocean science, cardiac fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and mathematical genomics. Another special feature is the central role of analysis, which provides a natural bridge between pure and applied mathematics.

The University provides housing facilities to its freshmen students in 7 of its residence halls. There are two types of residences provided which are apartment style and traditional style. Apartment style residences include two to three room suites which can accommodate up to six students and are provided at a low cost also. Traditional style residences include shared studios and one to two room suites accommodating up to 5 students. University housing is very limited and only available to full-time students, which requires that they enroll for 12 credits each semester. If they would like to be considered for housing, a completed admissions application must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by the priority deadline for the fall term.
