This program curriculum prepares students for careers as professionals in a variety of natural resource management agencies and organizations. Most employment opportunities are in the public sector, including such agencies as the National Park Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the USDA Forest Service, state park departments, and city and County Park and recreation departments. There are also positions with associations, resorts, concessionaires, retailers and various other enterprises. Graduates are employed as park managers, rangers, conservation officers, planners, naturalists, agency and unit directors and in other areas recreation and natural resource management. Students in the law enforcement option will graduate with a broad based knowledge of resource management and temporary certification as a park law enforcement officer. Many graduates of this option pursue employment with state agencies as game wardens/conservation officers. Others work as park rangers for federal agencies such as the national park service.

The modules include RRES 200 Topics: Ranger Training Academy (NPS) Credits: (9) or RRES 200 Topics: Ranger Training Academy (NPS + POST) Credits: (12); RRES 200 - Topics in Recreation Resources Credits: (1-3); Choose one course from the following for NPS+POST or two courses for NPS training: SOCIO 361 - Criminal Justice Systems Credits: (3); SOCIO 362 - Police and Society Credits: (3); SOCIO 460 - Youth and Crime Credits: (3); SOCIO 561 - Criminology Credits: (3); SOCIO 570 - Race and Ethnic Relations in the USA Credits: (3).

Students should be a high school graduate from an accredited high school. They should have achieved an ACT score of 21 or above or an SAT (critical reading and math) of 980 or above; or ranked in the top third of the graduating class at the end of the seventh or eighth semester; or completed the precollege curriculum such as English, natural science, math, and social science. In addition to this, if international students meet the academic requirements, Kansas State University may conditionally admit them with no proof of English proficiency. English proficiency requirements for unconditional admission are transfer students from a U.S. institution must have completed both 24 credit hours at an accredited U.S. institution and English Composition I and II with grades of C or better; an IBT (Internet based TOEFL) - composite score of 79 or higher; IELTS - composite score of 6.5 or higher; ACT - English part score of 23 or higher; SAT - verbal part score of 530 or higher; PTE - Pearson Test of English - overall score of 53 or higher; Eiken (Pre-1 score); and four years attendance in a U.S. high school with grades of C or better in all college preparatory courses.

The Department of Horticulture, Forestry and Recreation Resources on-campus home is within the Throckmorton Plant Science Center Complex on the K-State campus. The original Throckmorton building construction was completed in 1981 and in 1994, the east and west wings were added to the structure. The HFARR department is housed on the first three floors of the east wing of the Throckmorton Plant Science Center Complex. The department has 15,038 square feet of space used for instruction and 9,500 square feet of greenhouse space within this complex for instructional efforts. The department is also developing a 20 acre instructional garden (the Kansas State University Gardens) which provides a hands-on learning laboratory for our students in the ornamental plant area.

Students will be a part of a dynamic, supportive, and responsive community right on campus. Studies show that students who participate in residence hall programs: earn higher grades than students who commute or live off campus; have a greater chance of remaining in college; become more involved in university activities. This service offers lifestyle option for students to live in: Both single-gender and coeducational residence halls; Traditional rooms and suites; Continuous housing spaces; Quiet floors; Cluster floors include leadership studies, community service, agriculture, architecture, business administration, engineering, and pre-health; Apartment-style living for graduate students, upperclassmen, married students, and students with children. The housing also provide academic support such as: tutoring sessions, computer labs, multimedia classrooms, and quiet study rooms; trained staff in the academic resource centers in Derby and Kramer Dining Centers. K-State's dining program has been recognized by the National Association of College and University Food Services for having the best daily menus in the nation, special event dinners, and nutrition education. Students who need to study or have a class over lunch, a grab-and-go option is available in all dining centers. Three meal plans are available. Students can plan social events, set hall policies, and suggest changes in dining services menus. Some of the groups in which students can involve are: Association of Residence Halls, Hall governing boards, Dining services committees, National Residence Hall Honorary, Hall judicial boards, Floor governing councils, Diversity teams, Hall tour teams, and Housing and Dining ambassadors.
