This program has three main purposes: prepares students for graduate study in a specialized area of physical education and health. Majors may seek graduate degrees in sport administration, exercise physiology, sport psychology, physical education, health promotion, athletic training and other related areas; provide the major with the skills, knowledge and expertise needed to teach physical education in schools from the kindergarten level through high school. It is built around teacher certification requirements for physical education and health in Tennessee; prepares majors for teacher licensure.

International applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by meeting any one of the following: minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper-based test (PBT) or 80 internet-based test (iBT); minimum IELTS score of 6.5; minimum SAT Critical Reading score of 530 or ACT English subscore of 23; successful completion of ELS Language Center Level 112. All applicants with college level coursework from a foreign institution must have their transcripts evaluated by an approved foreign credential evaluation organization, such as World Educations Services (WES) or Joseph Silny and Associates or an evaluation service listed currently as a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
