This program is a combination of classical mathematics, the theory of probability, and new concepts related to inductive reasoning that have developed during the past 75 years. Almost all activities of plants and animals (including people) depend to some degree on chance events, and most decisions made by people depend on sampling information which also depends on chance events, and hence on probability. Consequently, fields of interest and activities for a statistician potentially are very broad. Likewise, the professional activities open to a trained statistician are varied. The existence of modern-day computers relieves the statistician of tedious computations and elevates his or her professional activity to dealing with people and/or engaging in basic research.

Students should be a high school graduate from an accredited high school. They should have achieved an ACT score of 21 or above or an SAT (critical reading and math) of 980 or above; or ranked in the top third of the graduating class at the end of the seventh or eighth semester; or completed the precollege curriculum such as English, natural science, math, and social science. In addition to this, if international students meet the academic requirements, Kansas State University may conditionally admit them with no proof of English proficiency. English proficiency requirements for unconditional admission are transfer students from a U.S. institution must have completed both 24 credit hours at an accredited U.S. institution and English Composition I and II with grades of C or better; an IBT (Internet based TOEFL) - composite score of 79 or higher; IELTS - composite score of 6.5 or higher; ACT - English part score of 23 or higher; SAT - verbal part score of 530 or higher; PTE - Pearson Test of English - overall score of 53 or higher; Eiken (Pre-1 score); and four years attendance in a U.S. high school with grades of C or better in all college preparatory courses.
