The mission of this program is to develop human potential, expand knowledge, and enrich cultural understanding and expression through high quality undergraduate and graduate education. Through scholarship/research, service, and production, the theatre program seeks to train future artists, scholars and teachers of theatre, and to inform the non-major, the university at large, and the surrounding community of the value of theatre to individuals and society. The theatre design program at KSU offers training in the areas of scenery, costumes and lighting design. Students may choose to concentrate in one or more of these areas. The beginning design student will learn the basics of design and construction through a series of courses offered in the various areas. Once a concentration is chosen the student will work one on one with the faculty member in that area to devise a program of study which will advance the student's skills as a designer. All design students are encouraged to work on construction crews, production crews and run crews beginning in their freshman year. This practical experience is essential to understanding the work of the designer. The advanced design student will have opportunities to design full-length plays in the Purple Masque Theatre and when selected, main stage selections. There are many behind the scenes theatre jobs which are essential to every production company. Theatre students at KSU will have the opportunity to explore these numerous production positions which may lead them to a career choice. These include technical director, master carpenter, master electrician, sound technician, props artisan, scenic artist, and cutter/draper and costume crafts person.

Students should be a high school graduate from an accredited high school. They should have achieved an ACT score of 21 or above or an SAT (critical reading and math) of 980 or above; or ranked in the top third of the graduating class at the end of the seventh or eighth semester; or completed the precollege curriculum such as English, natural science, math, and social science. In addition to this, if international students meet the academic requirements, Kansas State University may conditionally admit them with no proof of English proficiency. English proficiency requirements for unconditional admission are transfer students from a U.S. institution must have completed both 24 credit hours at an accredited U.S. institution and English Composition I and II with grades of C or better; an IBT (Internet based TOEFL) - composite score of 79 or higher; IELTS - composite score of 6.5 or higher; ACT - English part score of 23 or higher; SAT - verbal part score of 530 or higher; PTE - Pearson Test of English - overall score of 53 or higher; Eiken (Pre-1 score); and four years attendance in a U.S. high school with grades of C or better in all college preparatory courses.
