The mission of this program is to develop human potential, expand knowledge, and enrich cultural understanding and expression through high quality undergraduate and graduate education. Through scholarship/research, service, and production, the theatre program seeks to train future artists, scholars and teachers of theatre, and to inform the non-major, the university at large, and the surrounding community of the value of theatre to individuals and society. Students wishing to concentrate in this area will receive extensive hands-on training as well as classroom instruction. Opportunities for assistant stage management positions are possible in the freshman year with advancement to stage management of student productions and main stage productions in the sophomore year for the student who shows promise in this area. Stage management students are encouraged to seek internships with professional summer theatres after their sophomore year. The head of stage management will assist the talented stage management student in this pursuit. Many K-State students have reached their goal of becoming professional stage managers within years of graduation. Alums in stage management have worked on and off Broadway, in numerous Chicago theatres as well as top regional theatres and opera companies across the country. The alums often come back to K-State to share their knowledge and also to assist our students on their path to a career in the professional theatre.

Students should be a high school graduate from an accredited high school. They should have achieved an ACT score of 21 or above or an SAT (critical reading and math) of 980 or above; or ranked in the top third of the graduating class at the end of the seventh or eighth semester; or completed the precollege curriculum such as English, natural science, math, and social science. In addition to this, if international students meet the academic requirements, Kansas State University may conditionally admit them with no proof of English proficiency. English proficiency requirements for unconditional admission are transfer students from a U.S. institution must have completed both 24 credit hours at an accredited U.S. institution and English Composition I and II with grades of C or better; an IBT (Internet based TOEFL) - composite score of 79 or higher; IELTS - composite score of 6.5 or higher; ACT - English part score of 23 or higher; SAT - verbal part score of 530 or higher; PTE - Pearson Test of English - overall score of 53 or higher; Eiken (Pre-1 score); and four years attendance in a U.S. high school with grades of C or better in all college preparatory courses.
