The Urban Studies Program is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program offering B.S., B.A., and Minor degrees for students. The program focuses on the conceptual and analytical frameworks and specialized skills needed for professions focused on urban change or development in public agencies, non-profits, or private business, or for graduate study in urban planning, law, social welfare, public affairs, or the social and environmental sciences. The campus located in the very center of the largest metropolitan region in the entire Upper Midwest. It is certainly possible to study cities from a perch in St. Cloud or Winona. But here students can combine academic insights with regular and direct observation of, and exposure to, the issues being studied. This immediacy clearly deepens and enriches the learning experience. The Urban Studies program has for decades taken advantage of the location by drawing on community professionals to help teach the courses. Nearly all of the Colloquia and Workshop courses are taught by working professionals. The immense wealth of cultural resources in the metropolitan area also adds to the student experience. Though the University sometimes seems vast and overwhelming, the Urban Studies Program tries to humanize it. This is an undergraduate program only, with very personalized advising. They are able to focus on individual student needs, and students more easily get to know one another, and the faculty. The faculty and staff are interested in urban issues come from a number of excellent departments, and are productive researchers and teachers. A program in Urban Studies exposes students to many different departments and colleges, while maintaining a coherent focus to one's area of study. There are opportunities to get involved in the local community on many levels. All students do internships. Many also get involved with local neighborhood groups. The possibilities are endless.

The University provides housing and living learning opportunities on or near campus. The mission encompasses goals in three areas create individual student living/learning environments, enhance opportunities for commuter student housing and provide housing for students with families, faculty, and visitors. Housing and Residential Life, in coordination with the university police, work to provide a safe and healthy living environment for the student. The University offers eight residential halls and three apartment buildings. The amenities provided in all the residential halls and the apartments are air conditioning, carpeting, dining facilities within hall, card access main entry and resident areas; closet or wardrobe (expanded spaces may have clothes rack), community kitchen, computer lab, dresser, desk and chair (expanded spaces may have tables), Ethernet connection, extra-long twin bed and mattress pad, fee-for-service cable TV, health advocates (student health advisors), ice machines, laundry facilities, local telephone service (phones not provided), lounges, maintenance staff (full time), meeting space, music/piano practice rooms, nightly security monitors, smoke detectors and sprinklers, sports and recreational equipment, games, vacuums, and DVDs available for check out at information desk, study rooms, vending area and window coverings. Yudof Hall apartment, Roy Wilkins Hall and University Village offers different types of room types. University Dining Services has six residential restaurants and offers convenient and flexible meal plans perfect for students, staff or faculty who have a valid university ID. It serves up a changing menu of specialties including pizza, Asian stir-fry, vegetarian selections and American entrees. Each residential restaurant has operating hours and menus based on the needs of their community. A full menu service is offered during the breakfast, lunch/brunch, and dinner meal periods.
