The UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese is dedicated to the study and teaching of the languages, literatures, and cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world. Classes in Spanish were first offered at the Los Angeles State Normal School in 1917. For the first five years after the school became the Southern Branch of the University, both Spanish and French were taught by the Department of Romanic Languages. In 1924, the two language departments were separated, and Leonard D. Bailiff became chairman of the Department of Spanish. He held this position until 1942 when a combined Department of Spanish and Italian was established under the chairmanship of Marion A. Zeitlin, with courses offered in these two languages and their respective literatures and also in Portuguese, which had been taught in the department since 1938. Seven years later, the department was divided and the Spanish department, with John C. Crow as chairman, was officially designated the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. The Spanish and Portuguese language laboratory, incorporating the latest in electronic equipment for the teaching of foreign languages, was opened in 1964. Plans for further expansion of departmental offerings included the establishment of instruction in methodology for teachers at the elementary school level, a major program in Portuguese, and undergraduate courses in Hispanic folklore.

UCLA offer a variety of services to help students with their undergraduate and graduate housing needs. The on-campus housing is situated at the heart of university life and is just a short walk away from classrooms, laboratories, libraries and sports facilities. UCLA’s four high-rise residence halls are co-ed, with separate community restrooms and showers for men and women. Rieber Hall (one of the four high-rise residence halls) is undergoing renovation and does not currently house students. Most rooms in the other three residence halls will be shared by three students while the remaining rooms will have two student occupants. Residence hall amenities include furnished rooms with basic cable TV service and computer network connections in every room, plus laundry facilities on each floor. One building has a learning center and computer lab and all have study lounges. Most buildings have 24-hour front desk services for mail and messages and a residential restaurant on the premises or nearby. UCLA provides housing for single graduate student, married, or a single parent. University Apartments offers housing designed especially to meet the needs of families, married students, graduate students and students with same-sex domestic partners. Five complexes are located in the Palms-Mar Vista area, approximately five miles from UCLA, and one complex is located in Westwood Village. UCLA Dining Services is nationally recognized for innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, high quality food, and a warm and welcoming staff. They cater to students need for convenience and flexibility, providing a variety of menu choices, dining hours, and meal plans. The program is designed to deliver fresh, healthy, and tasty meals.
