The College of Science (COS) at SIUC has been experiencing tremendous change since 2000. Over 40 new faculty have been added to their ranks to replace retirements and each of these fine young scientists has brought with them new energy, new ideas and high level of commitment to excellence. Among the many achievements taking place in the College of Science have been: Several new patents and patent applications dealing with alternative fuels; A tripling of external grant awards $2M/yr up to $6M/yr; Over three hundred peer reviewed publications in respected journals; Prestigious international awards granted; Seven faculty named Fellows or Diplomats by their professional peers; Doctoral programs active in every academic department; Dynamic interdisciplinary research culture established among COS researchers.

SIUC has three residential living areas offering a variety of services and conveniences: air conditioning, cable television, local telephone service, postal service, computer labs with Internet access, and several dining locations. The standard room and board contract offers nineteen meals per week. The on-campus residence halls at SIUC are organized into four living areas: Brush Tower, Thompson Point, University Park, and University Hall. Each area has a commons building where meals, postal, and administrative services are provided. All rooms are furnished with single beds, closet space, chests of drawers, desks, study chairs, and draperies. Telephone jacks and cable television outlets are provided in each room. Personal items, such as bed linens and towels, must be provided by student. Specific Residence Halls, Wakeland and Kaplan Hall, are designated for single graduate and professional students. Each hall provides basic room furnishings, kitchen facilities, and lounge areas. Food contracts are optional. Southern Hills has one-bedroom and two-bedroom furnished apartments and furnished efficiencies. Elizabeth Apartments also offers furnished efficiencies. Efficiency consists of one room with combined living and kitchen facilities. It does not have a separate bedroom. SIUC operates two apartment complexes for married students and students with families at Southern Hills and Evergreen Terrace. Southern Hills has one-bedroom and two-bedroom furnished apartments. Evergreen Terrace has two-bedroom and three-bedroom unfurnished apartments. Prices range from $400-500 per month depending on the number of rooms in apartment. There are many off-campus apartments, housing, and residence halls available in Carbondale and nearby communities.
