The environmental studies curriculum is designed to give students the depth of intellectual and analytical skills along with the scholarly background necessary to understand and solve environmental problems. The program is interdisciplinary, drawing upon the resources of many related fields to provide the rigorous analysis necessary to understand environmental problems and formulate decisions that are environmentally sound.

Students will have their Core Requirements: 25 Hours. ECN 221; EVS 325 (ECN 325) or 330 (ECN 330), EVS 360, 361, 362 (BLA 362), 495; GGY 328; PLS 209 or EVS 364. A minimum of one hour of applied learning credit is required. Elective Requirements: 18 hours selected from the following: EVS 205, 325 (ECN 325) or 330 (ECN 330), EVS 363, 370 (PSY 370), 380, 420 (GLY 420) (PHY 420), 430,462, 470, 471, 472, 478, 479, 485, 488, 490, 491, 497, 498 (up to 6 hours total for any combination of EVS 491, 497, and 498), 499.

Students should have a graduation from an accredited secondary school. They must meet minimum course requirements as established by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina system. The course requirements should include the following: four course units in English, two course units in foreign language, four course units of mathematics, three course units in science and two course units in social science. A minimum 2.5 GPA on a U.S. scale of 4.0 is required. English proficiency is required of international applicants and is proven by one of the following: minimum score TOEFL should be 71 on the Internet-based exam, 197 on the computer-based exam, or 525 on the paper-based exam; minimum score of IELTS is 6.5 on the academic module; SAT-I Critical Reading score of 450 or higher; ACT reading section score of 20 or higher; Successful completion of UNCW’s ESL program, prior to applying; Having lived in the U.S. for 4 years or more and completion of 2 college-level courses of English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or better.
