To receive the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, a student accepted into the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences must complete a 24-hour, two-year program in residence at the University of Virginia. Course Work - 12 hours of writing courses.12 hours of courses in literature. Knowledge of a foreign language is not required for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing .M.F.A. Thesis - The project must comprise a substantial body of original writing--80 pages of fiction (one long or two or three short stories), or a collection of poems (approximately 30 poems). The M.F.A. thesis, in the opinion of the faculty, must be worthy of being published. Final Oral Examination - When the writing project (thesis) has been completed and conditionally approved, the candidate for the degree will take a one-hour oral examination. Guidelines for Poets - A one-hour discussion of the thesis as it relates both to its own themes and the larger tradition of poetry in English. For example, discussion might center on themes, techniques, or influences. To help us organize the oral examination, the candidate is encouraged to submit a brief list of poets or other writers whose work has influenced the project. Guidelines for Fiction Writers - Using the thesis as a starting point, the candidate should be prepared to discuss such matters as plot, characterization, point of view, the relation of action to reflection, and other questions of narrative technique. To help us organize the oral examination, the candidate is encouraged to submit a brief list of story writers or novelists whose work has influenced the project. The theses will be due on April 1, and oral exams will be given the third week of April, 2008.

The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. The cornerstone of the University's first building was laid in 1817, with Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe in attendance. The first class entered U.Va. in 1825, and the first degree was conferred in 1828. The University of Virginia envisions and cultivates a community of understanding, tolerance, and respect. The University of Virginia has eleven schools: the School of Architecture, the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the McIntire School of Commerce, the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Nursing all offer both undergraduate and graduate studies. The Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, the School of Law, and the School of Medicine offer graduate studies. The Curry School of Education offers graduate degrees and a 5-year dual degree program with the College of Arts and Sciences through which students receive both an undergraduate degree and a master's of education. The School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers a part-time undergraduate degree and many other programs and graduate study. The Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy trains students for public service careers in both domestic and international arenas. Graduates of the School will assume leadership positions in government, in the non-profit sector, in consulting firms, and in selected private sector firms.

The University of Virginia requires all incoming first year undergraduate students to live on-grounds. Alderman Road Residence area consists of 11 houses, accommodating over 1300 residents. Eight of the buildings are suite-style, with five double (some triple) bedrooms, totaling 9-11 residents per suite. Each suite shares a spacious common living area and a bathroom. The suite area provides a location for study that doesn't disturb a sleeping roommate, or a place to hang out with friends. The suite opens out to a balcony. The other three buildings have hallway-style double rooms. The University also offers a number of different residence styles and locations for upper class students. Apartments, single bedrooms in a suite arrangement, residential colleges, and language houses provide a wide variety of experiences for student living. Students in their final undergraduate year may also apply to live on the historic lawn at the heart of Jefferson's original university. It also reserves housing for graduate students in two areas. Copeley III is located across from the Law School in North Grounds, and offers apartment living with double-occupancy bedrooms. The historic range area and Cracker box are located in the center of Grounds. It has two apartment communities available for students with families. Copeley Hill and University gardens both offer several apartment options, and are designed to provide quality economical housing in an atmosphere of community interaction.
