This program intends to prepare students for graduate study in mathematics or may emphasize various fields of interest, such as preparation for secondary school teaching; actuarial science; or programs in applied mathematics including industrial mathematics, biology, mathematics applicable to computer science, and numerical analysis. Programs for the actuarial science, secondary school teaching, and computer science specializations earn a designation that appears on the diploma.

Students need to have completed college preparatory curriculum through high school graduation such as four years of English, three years of mathematics, science and social studies; two years of single second language and one year of visual and/or performing arts. They must have obtained high school rank percentile (Students from non-ranking schools and those with GED or other high school equivalency scores are given full consideration), grade point average and ACT or SAT scores. International students whose native language is not in English must fulfill language requirements by taking Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 213 computer-based, 550 paper-based and 79 internet-based; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 80 or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score of 6.5.

The University provides housing and living learning opportunities on or near campus. The mission encompasses goals in three areas create individual student living/learning environments, enhance opportunities for commuter student housing and provide housing for students with families, faculty, and visitors. Housing and Residential Life, in coordination with the university police, work to provide a safe and healthy living environment for the student. The University offers eight residential halls and three apartment buildings. The amenities provided in all the residential halls and the apartments are air conditioning, carpeting, dining facilities within hall, card access main entry and resident areas; closet or wardrobe (expanded spaces may have clothes rack), community kitchen, computer lab, dresser, desk and chair (expanded spaces may have tables), Ethernet connection, extra-long twin bed and mattress pad, fee-for-service cable TV, health advocates (student health advisors), ice machines, laundry facilities, local telephone service (phones not provided), lounges, maintenance staff (full time), meeting space, music/piano practice rooms, nightly security monitors, smoke detectors and sprinklers, sports and recreational equipment, games, vacuums, and DVDs available for check out at information desk, study rooms, vending area and window coverings. Yudof Hall apartment, Roy Wilkins Hall and University Village offers different types of room types. University Dining Services has six residential restaurants and offers convenient and flexible meal plans perfect for students, staff or faculty who have a valid university ID. It serves up a changing menu of specialties including pizza, Asian stir-fry, vegetarian selections and American entrees. Each residential restaurant has operating hours and menus based on the needs of their community. A full menu service is offered during the breakfast, lunch/brunch, and dinner meal periods.
