This program provides preparation for graduate work, or for employment in any field that requires analytical training, cogent reasoning, and clear self-expression. Students from other fields who are interested in Philosophy should note that some of the courses are cross-listed with Africana studies, anthropology, English, health care, psychology, theatre, and women's and gender studies. It also have a joint program major with Psychology.

Students should have strong high school preparatory program of basic academic subjects such as four years of English; three years of mathematics, including intermediate algebra; two years of laboratory science (biological/physical science), out of which three to four years are highly recommended; and three years of social studies. Courses in the fine arts, foreign language, and computer science are highly recommended. They must have obtained SAT or ACT scores. International students must have one of the following requirements: minimum TOEFL score of 61 (internet-based), 500 (paper-based) and 173 (computer-based); IELTS with an overall band score of 5.0; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 90; Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE); Certificate of Completion (English as a Second Language (ESL) level 112).
