The emphasis in public administration and service is designed primarily for students seeking a career in federal, state, or local government; in non-profits; or in regional quasi-governmental bodies such as public authorities, special districts, or councils of government. Northern Illinois offers students in the field a broad range of courses in politics, public policy, and administration to prepare students for graduate work in public administration, political science, or public law, and/or employment in the public or non-profit sectors. Course themes students may choose from include the following: American government and politics, Local government and politics, Democracy in America, Political philosophy, Comparative politics, Foreign policy making, International relations, Public bureaucracy, Life sciences and biomedicine, Energy, the environment, and social welfare, Governmental regulation, U.S. political institutions (Congress, Presidency, political parties and elections), Metropolitan governance and government.

Students should possess High School Diploma and should have GPA score of at least 2.50 on a 4.00 (USA) scale or be in the upper-half of their graduating class. Applicants who have a GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or are in the upper-half of the class must have ACT composite score of at least 19 and SAT score of 870-900. Applicants who have 2.50 on a 4.00 scale or are in the upper two-thirds of the class must have ACT composite score of at least 23 and SAT score of 1030-1050. Students should have TOEFL scores which includes 527 on a paper based test, 197 on computer-based test or 71 on an internet based test. IELTS Score includes 6.0. Students need not submit TOEFLE/IELTS score, if they can prove English is recognized as their countries' native language and if they have attended a US High School for more than 1 year.
