This program requires 30 semester hours, not including courses used to satisfy Liberal Studies requirements. Students must take at least 9 semester hours in American Studies courses (including AMS 3310 "Changing Concepts of the American Character" and AMS 3810 "The Life of the Mind in America," and a special topics course), and at least 3 hours each in literature, history, fine arts, and social sciences. No more than 12 hours in one of these areas can count toward the major. The remaining hours are distributed according to the plan of study developed by the student and the Program Director.

Students must have graduated from a regionally accredited high school with certain academic units such as 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics, natural science, social science and 2 sequential units of the same foreign language with a minimum cumulative grade point average in those academic units and present at least a B+ average in all academic subjects. They should possess the minimum critical reading score of 500 on the SAT, or 21 on the ACT English and 22 on the ACT reading, and a minimum math score of 500 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT and have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA in 6 semesters hours of approved college-level English and mathematics. Applicants whose native language is not in English and who have not studied in an English-speaking country for at least one academic year must have the minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test is required for admission.
