The mission of this program is to prepare students for beginning generalist professional social work practice with diverse, impoverished and oppressed populations in rural and urban settings. The primary goal of the program is to prepare students for competent, ethical entry level generalist professional social work practice with diverse, impoverished, vulnerable and oppressed groups in rural and urban settings. These social workers address a variety of social issues, using multi-method, multi-level approaches within a variety of practice settings to enhance the social functioning of individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities. Based upon a liberal arts perspective, it prepares students for the professional foundation.

The modules are as follows: SWK 200 Introduction to Social Welfare; SWK 201 Introduction Social Work; SWK 301 Human Behavior and Social Environment I; SWK 302 Human Behavior and Social Environment II; SWK 305 Rural Human Services; SWK 304 Diverse Populations; SWK 306 The Art of Interviewing; SWK 309 Social Work Methods: Individuals and Families; SWK 310 Social Work Methods: Grps, Orgs and comm; SWK 407 Field Instruction and Seminar; SWK 403 Social Welfare Policies and Services; SWK 410 Social Work Research Methods; SWK 415 Senior Seminar in Research.

Students must have earned a passing GED score. They should have all their official transcripts. They must have maintained a grade point average of “C” in core courses; they must have earned five passes on a national or a local examination; and must have attained a minimum score of 500 in TOEFL. Students who are 26 years or elder are exempt from college entrance examinations. They must have a score of 18 either in ACT or equivalent in SAT which should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions, Alabama A and M University.
