The Whittier College Department of English maintains a deep commitment to interdisciplinary and historical approaches to literary study. Courses in language, in various forms of writing, and in literary, textual, and cultural analysis, develop the ability in people around the world, to analyze experience and data, to express the results of analysis clearly and effectively, and to take greater pleasure in the experience of life itself. The study, creation, and appreciation of language and literature are thus a significant part of the lives of all liberally educated people. The department believes that the literary practice we have described here has real consequence in the life of the individual and the life of the community.

Whittier College students live in eight campus residence halls. Residence halls accommodate about 20 to 210 students. The residence halls are staffed by full-time Area Coordinators and undergraduate Resident advisers who provide students with continuous support, assistance, and program opportunities for learning and development. Whittier College is committed to providing a co-curricular environment which enhances and enriches the academic program and which provides students with opportunities for personal and social growth, self-discovery, and an appreciation of one’s responsibilities to self and others. To those ends, Whittier College sees residential living as an integral part of the student’s education. Residential living fosters a sense of community, facilitates the integration of the individual into campus activities and organizations, exposes students in a very direct and personal way to a pluralist community, encourages an atmosphere of free and wide-ranging expression of ideas, and develops in each person capacities for self-direction and deep concern for others.
