This program prepares undergraduate students as Europeanists. Offered jointly by the Departments of Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, and Political Science and International Relations, this interdisciplinary major combines extensive language training with courses in history, politics, and literature. Accordingly, it offers students a comprehensive knowledge of a particular European country and culture within a broader European context. Elective courses can be taken in art history, philosophy, music, or any other subject that is germane to the program. Students are encouraged to design a curriculum that will strengthen knowledge of both their target country and Europe as a whole. By combining several disciplines and analytical skills into a focused program, the CES major enables students to achieve a superior understanding of European civilization.

This department has sixty full-time and one part-time faculty, a Director for the Media Center, and an office staff of four. In addition, it has about twenty adjunct faculty who teach one or more courses per semester and twenty-five graduate teaching assistants. The Spanish faculty is the largest, followed by French, German, Italian, and Asian Languages (Chinese and Japanese); the faculties in Russian and Classics are comparable in size; and also has faculty members who teach Hebrew and Arabic on a regular basis, as well as Portuguese when demand is sufficient to warrant a course. By providing opportunities both on campus and abroad for the study of foreign languages and literatures, and the civilizations and cultures where those languages are or once were spoken, the Department defines and fulfills its basic mission.
