This program fosters skills that have broad applications in public policy, research and the private sector. It teaches students to reason spatially by applying geographic techniques and information technologies, including new technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It helps students produce sophisticated understandings of the world, its people, environments, economic structures and cultures. Urban Development and Planning is opening the door to careers in urban and regional planning.

The modules are Geography (GEO): 101 - Earth's Physical Landscape; 103 - Urbanization; 170 - Earth's Cultural Landscape or 172 - Cultural Geography; 241 - Geographic Information Systems I; 299 - Nature of Geography; 300 - Geographical Inquiry, Concentration Core (3 courses/12 qtr hrs): GEO: 133 - Urban Geography (JYEL); 233 - Comparative Urbanism; 333 - Urban Planning and Problems, Methods and Techniques (2 courses/8 qtr hrs): GEO: 242 - GIS II; 243 - Remote Sensing; 344 - GIS III; 391 - Research Techniques, Systematic Surveys and Seminars (1 course/4 qtr hrs): GEO: 205 - Justice, Inequity and the Urban Environment; 266 - The World Economy; 331 - Chicago: Spatial Anatomy of a Metropolis; or any course listed under Regional Analyses, Supporting Fields: ECO 105 - Principles of Microeconomics; ECO - 106 Principles of Macroeconomics; plus three (3) urban-related courses selected from course offerings in History of Art and Architecture, Anthropology, Environmental Sciences, History, Political Science, Public Policy Studies, and Sociology.

Applicants should have completed or are about to complete their secondary school education (high school) and have not taken any college or university coursework after finishing their secondary education. Applicants educated outside the US, regardless of their legal status, should have a proof of English proficiency. Applicants can prove their English proficiency by submitting any of the tests below: minimum TOEFL score of 80, no section lower than 17 (internet based), 213 (computer-based) or 550 (paper based); minimum IELTS score of 6.5; minimum SAT verbal score of 500; minimum ACT score of 18 on the reading section, and 20 on the English section and a minimum Pearson Test of English Academic score of 53.
