Attaining greater understanding of past and present Earth processes is the fundamental goal of geosciences. To achieve this goal the geoscientist studies the minerals, rocks, fluids, and fossils of the Earth and investigates the physical, chemical, and biological processes occurring on and in the Earth. Professional opportunities in geology exist in the environmental, energy, and mineral resources industries and in government agencies concerned with these fields. In addition, many occupations concerned with law, management, economics, and the environment utilize a background in geosciences. Specific degree plans will be formulated by the undergraduate advisor in Geosciences. Changing circumstances may require changes to the degree plans. Careers in the geosciences appeal to those with an interest in science who like to travel and to work outdoors. Geology majors are typically employed in the areas of natural resources, assessment of natural hazards, the impact of climate change or environmental management. Jobs with smaller domestic energy and environmental companies are relatively abundant for those holding this degree, although many choose to pursue graduate degrees and work for major international energy companies or scientific research laboratories. Those working in environmental geology are advised to take the Fundamentals of Geology portion of the National Association of State Boards of Geology licensing exam during their senior year. The UT Dallas curriculum specifically addresses areas covered in this exam. Steady population and economic growth put stresses on water and natural resources, which combined with the impacts of climate change, provide a growing demand for geoscientists. Job opportunities abound in Environmental, energy and mineral resources industries; Government agencies associated with natural resources, environment and the impacts of climate change; and Occupations concerned with law, management, economics, and environmental management.

Applicants must have completed a full, college-track high school curriculum, including language arts (4 units), mathematics (3.5 units), science (3 units of laboratory science, excluding physical science), social sciences (3 units), foreign language (2 units in a single foreign language), and fine arts (.5 unit in music, art, or drama). International Students must have minimum TOEFL score of 550 on paper based, 213 on computer based or 80 on the internet based test, 6.5 on IELTS or 67 on PTE academic.
