The Journalism major offers preparation for careers in advertising, broadcast news, web journalism, newspaper/magazine, and public relations. The journalism student is required to take career-oriented skills courses to enhance writing, editing, and graphic abilities, as well as theory courses to broaden the student's philosophical understanding.

The courses are JOUR 1700 Survey of Mass Communication, JOUR 2121 Media Writing, JOUR 4700 Mass Communication, And one course from the media cluster: JOUR 4712 Mass Media and Culture, JOUR 4702 Current Issues in Journalism, JOUR 4708 Mass Media Professional Ethics, JOUR 4716 History of Mass Communication, In addition to the Journalism core studies, public relations students complete the following: JOUR 3400 Introduction to Public Relations, JOUR 3410 Public Relations Research, JOUR 3421 Public Relations Writing, JOUR 3900 Desktop Journalism, JOUR 4420 Public Relations Case Studies, JOUR 4440 Public Relations Campaigns, MKTG 3010 Principles of Marketing and MGMT 3110 Organization and Management.

Applicants should have completed High school, General Education Development (GED) Test or have an equivalent qualification. Applicants must also submit scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Testing Program (ACT). International applicants whose native language is not English must supply results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL) or its equivalent.
