The Letters major provides an excellent preparation for advanced study in professional and graduate schools. Many Letters graduates have chosen to continue their studies in such fields as medicine, law, business, government, education, and religious ministry. The Letters major is among those within the College of Arts and Sciences approved for teacher certification. The specific areas applicable are language arts and foreign languages.

Students should possess graduation from an accredited high school or they should have received a GED. The high school curricular core requirements should include the following courses: 4 units of English, 3 units of college prep math, 3 units of laboratory science, 3 units of history and citizenship and 2 additional units. An official TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test (213 on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test), IELTS score of 6.5 and cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) is required.
