In this program, students receive a thorough grounding in literary ideas and methods as well as a broad acquaintance with literature of different periods and cultures, including literature in translation. Courses in this major are divided into the following groups: Literary Genres, English and American Literature, General Literature Courses, and Foreign Languages and Literature. By selecting courses from a variety of these headings, students are able to combine courses in criticism and interpretation, in writing and translation, and in linguistics and languages. Students may also be certified to teach English and/or history and/or social studies. Graduates with a degree in literary studies enjoy careers in journalism, advertising or public relations, publishing, editing, grant writing, translating, teaching or working for a nonprofit organization. Others continue to enroll in graduate school or law school.

This program module includes Degree Requirements (120 hours); Core Curriculum Requirements: 42 hours; Communication (6 hours); 3 hours Communication (RHET 1302); 3 hours Communication Elective (HUMA 3300); Social and Behavioral Sciences (15 hours); 6 hours Government (GOVT 2301 and 2302); 6 hours American History ; 3 hours Social and Behavioral Science Elective; Humanities and Fine Arts (6 hours); 3 hours Fine Arts (ARTS 1301); 3 hours Humanities (HUMA 1301); Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning (6 hours); 3 hours College Math (MATH 1314 is recommended); 3 hours Quantitative Mathematics (STAT 1342); Science (9 hours including at least one course with a substantial laboratory component); Major Requirements, Lower Division: 3 hours; LIT 2341 Literary Analysis; Major Requirements, Upper Division: 42 hours; Major Core Courses (6 hours); HUMA 3300 Reading and Writing Texts; LIT 3300 Western Literary Tradition; Major Distribution and Elective Courses (24 hours); 3 hours of upper-division courses from each of the following groups: Literary genres; Literature before 1850; 18 hours of upper-division Literary Studies electives; Major- Related Courses (12 hours; Elective Requirements: 33 hours; Advanced Electives (6 hours); Free Electives (27 hours).

Applicants must have completed a full, college-track high school curriculum, including language arts (4 units), mathematics (3.5 units), science (3 units of laboratory science, excluding physical science), social sciences (3 units), foreign language (2 units in a single foreign language), and fine arts (.5 unit in music, art, or drama).. International Students must have minimum TOEFL score of 550 on paper based, 213 on computer based or 80 on the internet based test, 6.5 on IELTS or 67 on PTE academic.
