This department is an interdisciplinary, student-oriented department with a unique vision for teaching audio and visual media production, telecommunications management and critical studies. Its uniqueness is reflected in a pedagogy that melds academic and creative scholarship as well as the classroom and community as venues of teaching, its aim is to empower and equip students with the skills and tools necessary to promote liberation from social, political economic and cultural injustice. The department has the mission to provide a scholarly, humanistic and professional education that prepares students to become socially and culturally sensitive, highly skilled communicators; to create and disseminate knowledge in the form of traditional academic scholarship and scholarly creativity, including visual and audio media productions; to produce innovative, socially conscious media producers, critics, researchers, entrepreneurs, scholars, managers and policy-makers; to promote and enhance the well-being of youth, African-Americans and people of color through service learning and research.

This university's vital residence life community provides many opportunities for involvement in student life and will develop lasting friendships. Generally, prospective residents are assigned a housing space prior to check-in. These assignments consist of a room type, corresponding room rate, and a period of occupancy. Specific rooms are assigned upon check-in. In some cases, original room types may change at the time of check-in. Each room has a corresponding rate based on a general room type structure. All assignments and fees are subject to change without notice. Residents are required to attend all mandatory meetings. Failure to comply with these meetings may result in loss of visitation as deemed appropriate by the Community Director. Each Residence Hall is equipped with seminar rooms and/or recreation space. Generally, special program initiatives are sponsored in these locations. If staff/students wish to reserve use of the seminar room or lounge spaces, special reservation forms must be completed and approved by the Community Director. Several halls are equipped with an intercom system that provides communication throughout the hall. The University Front Desk Staff is not permitted to give out phone numbers or location of their residents. The university's residential halls have laundry facilities/card machines, cafeteria/stores, vending machines service, micro-fridge service, computer labs, and kitchens. The Office of Residence Life has a zero tolerance policy concerning students found to be in the possession of, or using, weapons and/or illegal drugs. The presence of drugs of any sort, or weapons, in a student’s room constitutes possession for these purposes. The university also provides off-campus housing for the students. Neither University nor the Office of Residence Life is responsible for any problems arising in the off-campus housing.
