The first-year Studio Foundation is an intensive, practice-based experience that establishes and develops a common visual vocabulary involving basic perceptual, conceptual and intuitive skill, utilizing models from contemporary and modern art history. The program promotes imaginative critical thinking skills and self-discipline. Students engage in creative problem solving through conventional and unconventional media and techniques associated with a range of studio activity, and advance an understanding of and sensitivity towards the non-verbal language of art and design. Through a variety of experiences from rigorous classroom critiques and discussion, seminars, visiting artist lectures and exhibitions, first-year students are introduced to new ideas and practices and develop a critical acumen that prepare them for advanced study. Students will also become familiar with the major achievements in the history of art through lectures as well as studio activities.

The courses are: ARST 1040 Pro Seminar in Art 1 hr, ARST 1050 Drawing I 3 hrs, ARST 1060 Color/Composition 3 hrs, ARST 1070 Drawing II 3 hrs, ARST 1080 3-Dimensional Design 3 hrs, ARHI 2300 Monuments of Art 3 hrs, ARHI 2400 Contemporary Survey 3 hrs or approved equivalent.

Students should be a high school graduate. They should have an official SAT-I verbal score of 430 or higher; an official TOEFL score of at least 80 on the Internet-based exam or 213 on the computer-based version. TOEFL scores must be less than two years old if you have not been studying at a U.S. institution since taking the exam; an official IELTS score of 7.0 or higher and should take equivalent of English 1101 and 1102 (first-year composition) at an accredited U.S. institution and earn a minimum 2.5 combined GPA for the two courses.
