Students must have official transcripts of CSC, CXC, GCE, WASC, CGSE or official final secondary school records, results from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test Assessment (ACT), international students from non-English speaking country must have scores from Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). All new entrants to the Department of Music must present a successful audition in voice or on an instrument.

This department occupies the third floor and the basement of Lulu Vere Childers Hall, the former College of Fine Arts. The building is a three-story brick and cinder block structure located on the north side of the main campus. The third floor houses administrative offices of the Department, a 100-125 seat recital hall, 19 faculty offices/studios, and an organ studio, four classrooms for courses in theory, history, education, therapy, and a Smart Room. In addition, three laboratories are located on the third floor: a Keyboard Laboratory consisting of nine electronic pianos; a Music Education/Music Therapy Laboratory which consists of a three room suite that houses offices, a material bank, and a viewing room for role playing. The material bank contains books, periodicals, cassette tapes, games, music, recordings, computers, software, overhead and opaque projectors, and musical instruments; a Jazz Studies Digital Music Laboratory consisting of multiple work stations that include a computer, keyboard/synthesizer, stereo speakers and headphones. In addition, the laboratory contains recording and playback equipment. The basement area houses a band room, band offices, band storage rooms, five studios, an organ room, and 30 practice rooms, most of which are equipped with an upright or grand piano. The practice rooms are adequate in size, and the ventilation system is satisfactory. A modest amount of sound abatement material is installed on the cinder block walls. Recent improvements in the Department of Music's facilities include new heating/air-conditioning units, carpeting, and computers in each office, a security system, a Smart Room, window replacement, asbestos removal, painting, new restrooms, and improved lighting. It owns 20 grand pianos, 39 uprights, 10 electronic pianos, two harpsichords, and two organs.

This university's vital residence life community provides many opportunities for involvement in student life and will develop lasting friendships. Generally, prospective residents are assigned a housing space prior to check-in. These assignments consist of a room type, corresponding room rate, and a period of occupancy. Specific rooms are assigned upon check-in. In some cases, original room types may change at the time of check-in. Each room has a corresponding rate based on a general room type structure. All assignments and fees are subject to change without notice. Residents are required to attend all mandatory meetings. Failure to comply with these meetings may result in loss of visitation as deemed appropriate by the Community Director. Each Residence Hall is equipped with seminar rooms and/or recreation space. Generally, special program initiatives are sponsored in these locations. If staff/students wish to reserve use of the seminar room or lounge spaces, special reservation forms must be completed and approved by the Community Director. Several halls are equipped with an intercom system that provides communication throughout the hall. The University Front Desk Staff is not permitted to give out phone numbers or location of their residents. The university's residential halls have laundry facilities/card machines, cafeteria/stores, vending machines service, micro-fridge service, computer labs, and kitchens. The Office of Residence Life has a zero tolerance policy concerning students found to be in the possession of, or using, weapons and/or illegal drugs. The presence of drugs of any sort, or weapons, in a student’s room constitutes possession for these purposes. The university also provides off-campus housing for the students. Neither University nor the Office of Residence Life is responsible for any problems arising in the off-campus housing.
