This program enables students to gain an understanding of U.S. history, society, and cultures, past and present. It centers on courses that promote a multiethnic perspective on the U.S.; students may also examine U.S. experience within the broader context of Canadian and Latin American experience and from an international perspective. It gives students the flexibility to explore a variety of academic fields to widen their knowledge and prepare them for professional life or graduate study.

Students who have no previous work at the post-secondary level must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) from a secondary school. Students must also meet the criteria for admission to university level study in their home country. Students must have any one of the following as proof of English competency - TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 525 on the paper test or 70 on the internet based test; completion of the University of Idaho American Language and Culture Program (ALCP); SAT critical reading with a minimum score of 500; IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.0; Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) with a pass; Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) with a pass; Cambridge International 'O' Levels with a pass; MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) with a score of 74. English proficiency demonstration is waived for any applicant who has a previous degree at an accredited U.S. institution or who have taken English classes at U.S. institutions and passed those classes or students from countries where English is the native language and/or the official language for academic instruction.
