This program is designed to develop students concern and knowledge about current world problems and to provide them with skills and experience needed to enter professional careers in applied social sciences or to continue advanced training in the anthropological sub disciplines, law, public health, or other professional fields. It focuses on archaeology and ethnology as specialized areas of study. A diverse curriculum provides courses in the major subfields of ethnology, archaeology, linguistics, and physical anthropology as well as in the study of important world regions, such as the United States, North America, Latin America, and Africa. Specialized courses are offered in medical anthropology, applied anthropology, historic archaeology, nutrition, sexuality, economic development, ethnic studies in the United States, and cultural reconstruction from symbolic behavior. Topics are cast in a comparative, often global purview, and students view human problems such as hunger, religious conflict, sexism, racism, and inequality from the anthropological perspective.

The modules are communication (6 hours) - ENGL 1303, 1304; mathematics (3 core hours) - math 1310, Math reasoning/formal sciences (9 core hours), U.S. History (6 core hours) - HIST 1377 and 1378; political science (6 core hours) - POLS 1336 and 1337, Humanities (3 core hours), Visual and performing arts (3 core hours), Natural sciences (8 core hours). Social sciences (6 hours) (one must be writing intensive). CLASS required courses (9 core hours). From the following fields: AAS, American cultures, anthropology, art, art history, Chinese, classical studies, communications, communication disorders, dance, economics, English, French, geography, German, Greek, history, honors, interdisciplinary studies, Italian, Latin, Mexican American studies, music (MUED, MUSA, MUSI), philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies, Russian, Russian studies, sociology, Spanish, theatre and women's studies. Major: (30 hours at least 18 advanced) - ANTH 2302 (required) - 6 hours from 2301, 2303, 2304 (required); ANTH 4310 - 15 hours of anthropology electives; 3 hours anthropology elective (any level).

Students must meet one of the following college readiness standards in order to be eligible to be considered for admission at a Texas four-year public institution. Students must successfully complete the recommended or advanced high school program or complete the portion of the program that was available to them; or students must have the scores of SAT - 1500 out of 2400 (verbal, math and writing)/ACT - 18 English, 21 reading, 22 mathematics and 24 science; or successfully complete a curriculum that is equivalent in content and rigor to the recommended or advanced high school program at a high school that is exempt from offering such programs. Students that do not meet one of first two requirements must prove they meet the third requirement by having their counselor fill out the high school curriculum certification form and submit to the University of Houston. Students must complete each of the high school academic core courses (four units of English; three units of mathematics, including at least algebra I, algebra II, and geometry; two units of laboratory science, including at least one unit/credit in biology, chemistry, or physics; three units of social studies; two units/credits in one foreign language) with an average of a 2.5 or a “C+” or higher for the group. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or completion of level six of the University of Houston’s Language and Culture Center.
