In this program, students will learn how soft goods (bedding, towels, rugs, curtains) and hard goods (dinnerware, glassware, and cookware) are developed for home markets. Students will explore bedding and bath, kitchen and tabletop, giftware, and decorative accessories. Students will learn the many factors involved in the development process, including materials, lifestyle dynamics, sourcing and distribution, branding and licensing, packaging, marketing and merchandising. Students work in a collaborative environment that mirrors the industry. Students gain strategic marketing knowledge, global awareness, and presentation skills and graduate prepared to work closely with product developers, designers, merchandisers, and marketers to develop products people want to live with. In this program, students will: travel to the High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina and the International Home and House wares Show in Chicago have travel abroad opportunities to London and Paris for the International Maison et Objet Trade show; get real-world experience through internships at top companies such as Calvin Klein Home, Nautica Home, Kitchen Aid, Cuisinart, and Oneida, among many others. Students will learn to create a complete product line, and manage the entire home products development and design process. Students will understand the connection between trends and the business of home products. Students will acquire the computer skills and technical expertise required in the industry. Students will collaborate with other students in the Home Products Development Club, working in teams, to participate in an industry-sponsored Junior and Senior Product Development Competition. Challenged to develop an innovative product from start to finish, students will present the results to a panel of industry experts and faculty. Graduates of the Home Products Development program are working at major corporations, specialty manufacturers, and retailers in the home products industry. They hold positions as: Product developers, Product designers, Product managers, Trend forecasters, Marketing managers, Key account managers, Buyers, Stylists, Showroom and store managers and Merchandisers. Companies employing FIT graduates include: Calvin Klein Home, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, West Elm, Cuisinart, Bloomingdale’s, Donna Karan Home, Jonathan Adler, Mikasa, Baccarat, Tommy Hilfiger at Home, Target, The Container Store, Waverly Home, Sferra Brothers, Waterford-Wedgewood, Macy’s and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Students must have completed an AAS degree from FIT or an equivalent degree or 60 appropriate credits from a regionally accredited four-year bachelor’s degree program. Those who have completed less than four years of English (not ESL) at a U.S. high school are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS. International students must have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on internet-based (ibt) test, 213 on computer-based test, 550 on paper-based test; IELTS band score of 6.5 in the academic module is required. Applicants who have completed an English composition course at a college in the U.S. are not exempt from taking the TOEFL or IELTS scores.
