This program's objective is to provide an outstanding education that prepares its graduates to succeed as practicing chemical engineers, or serves as a foundation for advanced study in chemical engineering or related fields, or that qualifies the department's graduate to seek professional degrees in fields such as medicine or law; and to provide opportunities for its graduates to specialize in specific career areas of chemical engineering, such as materials development and processing, biological engineering, process engineering and and environmental engineering. The Materials Processing concentration is designed to add additional emphasis in solid state and inorganic materials. Students who are interested in working in the realm of high technology materials should choose this concentration. This rapidly developing field is expected to provide many job opportunities in the next decade. New materials are currently being developed whose properties depend strongly on their micro structure and processing history. Materials included in this category are advanced ceramics, polymers, composites, photonics, superconductors, semiconductors, and recording media. The technologies that will prove to be important include: process integration, reactor design and engineering, ultra purification, materials synthesis and processing, thin film deposition, modeling, chemical dynamics, and process design and control for safety and environmental protection.

Students must have an American upper secondary school education or equivalent and have the appropriate diplomas or satisfactory results on leaving examinations, with strong academic preparation or a U.S. equivalent grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (for freshman applicants) or 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (for transfer students), a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or a minimum of 520 on the paper test, 190 on the computerized version, or 68 on the internet-based test in TOEFL, minimum score for the CPE or CAE is a C.
