Shortly after its founding, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) became the beneficiary of educational provisions for African Americans made possible through the passage of the Second Morrill Act of 1890. Through this important federal legislation, FAMU, formerly known as the “State Normal College for Colored Students,” was designated to receive a land grant “to the endowment and support of branches of learning as related to agriculture and mechanic arts, including military tactics.” Unlike the 1862 predominantly white counterpart institutions, however, FAMU and the other sixteen 1890 historically black colleges were not given any resources to carry out the research and development areas of the land-grant tripartite system until 1966. As a result, the school was relegated to teaching without the benefits of research and extension funds from either the federal or state governments.

This university offers Cropper Hall: Cropper Hall is a freshmen facility. Each bathroom is equipped with several shower stalls, toilets, and sinks. Cropper Hall is centrally located on campus for easy access to most classrooms, the library and media center. Diamond Hall: Diamond shares a lobby with McGuinn Hall. It is equipped with a laundry facility, electronic access, wireless internet capability, and a general study area downstairs. Diamond Hall offers community bathrooms. Each bathroom is equipped with several shower stalls, toilets, and sinks. The facility is within walking distance to the bus terminal, the Student Union Building, and the main administration building. Gibbs Hall: Gibbs introduced the bill to the Florida Legislature that provided for the establishment of the college. Gibbs Hall has three hundred and five bed spaces. It is equipped with a laundry facility, electronic access, and wireless internet capability. Gibbs Hall offers community bathrooms. Each bathroom is equipped with several shower stalls, toilets, and sinks. Gibbs Hall is located in the West Quadrangle of campus on Wahnish Way directly across the street from the Bragg Memorial Stadium. McGuinn Hall: McGuinn Hall is a three and one half story facility with 110 rooms which accommodates a total of two-hundred and sixteen (216) bed spaces. McGuinn and Diamond shares a lobby. It is equipped with a laundry facility, electronic access, wireless internet capability, and a general study area downstairs. McGuinn Hall offers community bathrooms.
