The Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation offered by the Department of HPER at Emporia State University is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in the area of recreation. Graduates learn to assess constituents, and to design, implement and evaluate programs to affect leisure choices of participants associated with various public and private agencies and institutions at local, state, national, and international levels. The Recreation curriculum centers on preparing critical thinkers, creative planners, and effective practitioners for careers in the recreation field.

The modules include RC 100 Introduction to Leisure Services, RC 150 Foundations of Recreational Activities and Leadership, RC 270 Sport management, RC 360 Facility Management, RC 374 Recreation Delivery Systems, RC 389 Program Design and Implementation, RC 395 Practicum 1 in Leisure Studies, RC 401 Aquatic Management, RC 410 Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management, RC 420 Revenue Resource Management in Leisure Studies, RC 425 Promotion and PR in Leisure Studies, RC 430 Leadership and Management of Personnel in Leisure Studies, RC 451 Professional Development, RC 470 Practicum, RC 520 Special Topics in Leisure Studies, RC 570 Internship in Recreation, HL 155 First Aid and Personal Safety.

Students who graduate from an accredited high school must meet one of the following three requirements: ACT composite of 21 or higher or Rank in the top third of the graduating class or A grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale in the recommended core curriculum courses. International student applicants whose language is not English must take the “Test of English as a Foreign Language” (TOEFL) and have the score sent directly to Emporia State University from the testing center. Applicants are responsible for making arrangements with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and having their scores reported directly from ETS to the Office of International Education.
