This program's graduates develop the required competencies and become eligible to apply for licensure in Early Childhood Education, Birth to Grade 3, from the New Mexico Public Education Department. students spend their freshman through senior years completing progressively more intensive course work relevant to the education of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and children in Kindergarten through third grade. This program's majors are expected to complete nine credit hours of practicum in accordance with program requirements. These practicals allow students to gain direct experience with young children in a diversity of programs designed for infants and toddlers, preschool-age, and in Kindergarten through Third Grade classrooms. Students are placed in program-approved, community-based programs where they gain knowledge and insight from teachers already working in the field.

Students must have an American upper secondary school education or equivalent and have the appropriate diplomas or satisfactory results on leaving examinations, with strong academic preparation or a U.S. equivalent grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (for freshman applicants) or 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (for transfer students), a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS or a minimum of 520 on the paper test, 190 on the computerized version, or 68 on the internet-based test in TOEFL, minimum score for the CPE or CAE is a C.
