The program is available for students interested in a professional career in architecture or in the historical, aesthetic, and engineering aspects of buildings and other structures. It is offered jointly by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Art and Art History, provides a solid foundation in both the technical aspects of structural systems and the aesthetic and functional characteristics of buildings from an architectural and art history point of view. The flexibility of the BSE degree allows greater concentrations in both art history and studio courses than would otherwise be possible, while providing a coherent basis for graduate work in architecture or design.

Full-time graduate students in the first year of their programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nutrition, or College of Special Studies may apply for on-campus graduate student housing. The Tufts University Residential Life Office assigns Fairmont, McCollester, and Tousey Houses as graduate student residences. These houses are located in the "uphill" section of the Medford campus, off of Winthrop Street. Collectively, these three houses offer 39 single occupancy rooms. The rooms come in three sizes and are priced accordingly. No two rooms are exactly the same size. Each residence has a common room or lounge and shared bathrooms. One small kitchen is available in each residence and is shared with all of the occupants of each house. One kitchen must be shared amongst 10 to 16 residents, with limited storage space.
