The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Rhode Island provides a challenging intellectual environment, offering academic programs leading to BS, MS and PhD Degrees in the fields of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The BS degree in Industrial Engineering is accredited by ABET. The Department has a strong national and international reputation for education and research in improving manufacturing competitiveness, together with a tradition for industrial collaboration. Industrial Engineering was first introduced into URI in 1947. In 1985, the emphasis of the programs was changed to include manufacturing engineering and the name changed to Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. The department has changed its name to "Industrial and Systems Engineering" in 2007 to reflect the needs of industry. This name change allows the department to gain regional and national visibility and becomes the first Industrial and Systems Engineering department in New England and the twenty-second in the nation.

The University Gateway Apartments are located at the entrance of Upper College Rd. There are 24 apartments designated for graduate students. The apartments are unfurnished but do have a stove and refrigerator. The monthly rent includes heat and hot water. A laundry facility is located at the end of the complex. The Gateway community offers a 24-hour on-call site manager and convenient parking. A graduate assistant is available to provide on-site assistance and service. The University Village is located directly across the main street from the Kingston Campus on Route 138. This complex offers 100 unfurnished apartments, 35 two-bedrooms and 65 three-bedrooms. There are seven buildings in the University Village each containing a laundry room. Each apartment has University electric including the heat. Utilities are not included in the rent, however a stove and refrigerator is included. First year halls are clustered within residential neighborhoods conveniently located between the academic and athletic/recreation sectors of campus as follows: South End - Adams, Barlow, Bressler, Browning, Butterfield, Rainbow Diversity House (partial freshman housing), Weldin; Hope Quad - Hutchinson, Merrow, Peck, Tucker; West Side - Fayerweather, Gorham; and Northwoods - Heathman. These are co-ed residences in which female and male rooms are arranged along either side of a residential corridor or hallway. These halls have been selected specifically for first year housing because their floor plans encourage the kind of social interaction that facilitates the smooth transition to college life at URI.
