This interdisciplinary program draws it courses from the fields of communication, economics, industrial relations, history, law, philosophy, political science, and sociology. The program integrates these disciplines in order to study work, the work process, workers’ lives and experiences; to understand the needs and questions facing labor in unions and labor organizations. It educates current and future workers with the essential knowledge and skills to strengthen the labor movement, to advance trade unionism, and to achieve workers rights and equity; central to the development of democratic institutions nationally and around the world. This program has distinguished alumni that hold positions of leadership around the country, including union president, bargaining committee chairperson, education director for an international union, director of organizing, union staff representative, occupational health and safety inspector, labor journalist, labor lawyer, labor educator, National Labor Relations Board staff member, executive director of a nonprofit organization, and community organizer. The Labor Studies Program educates students - with special emphasis on adult learners and workers - on work, the workplace, organized labor, and the changing effects of global economic markets. The program prides itself on being not only a locally but nationally and internationally recognized.

This program module includes Arts and Humanities: Afro American studies, classical studies, comparative literature, English, fine arts, folklore and ethnomusicology, history, history and philosophy of science, journalism, languages, music, philosophy, religious studies, speech and communication, theater and drama, Science and Mathematics: astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, geological sciences, mathematics, physics, psychology, zoology, Social and Behavioral Sciences: anthropology, economics, geography, linguistics, political science, psychology, social work, sociology.

Applicants must have completed the entire primary/secondary university preparatory sequence in the country where they studied or completed a challenging course of study in secondary school designed to prepare them for study at a university including math and science or graduation diploma, school certificate, or certificate of education with strong grades or marks in secondary school course work and/or examinations. Applicants must have the SAT verbal results of 400 or 17 English ACT. International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 500(paper-based version), 173 (computer-based version), 61 (Internet-based version) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or score of 45 on Pearson Test of English Academic or to study English intensively at the ELS Language Centers at IUPUI and complete ELS intensive Level 109. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken. After being admitted, students may require to take one or more supplemental EAP courses to develop additional language proficiency if TOEFL scores are below 80 (iBT), 550 (PBT) or 213 (CBT) in IUPUI EAP placement test.
