The undergraduate curriculum in the materials science and engineering (MSE) program embodies the interplay between structure, processing, and properties of engineering materials, with emphasis on applications and materials design. While all materials are addressed within the curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on ceramic materials. Here, the high-temperature phenomenon in the entire field of inorganic chemistry and physics is addressed with particular emphasis on cutting-edge materials and technologies. The curriculum covers both the crystalline and glassy phases of many materials types. The core courses and research projects include studies of composition, phase, and structure; the interaction of materials to stress, temperature, varying chemical environments, and radiation of all frequencies; and the processing of complex engineering components and devices.

Applicants who studied in Indian schools are requested to submit the Higher Secondary Certificate and Secondary School Certificate. Those who have studied are requested to submit Hong Kong Certificate of Education and/or British GCE "O" and or "A" Level exams, and Pakistan students are requested to submit 10th and 12th grade mark sheets (Matriculation and Intermediate Certificate). Applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of US residency status, are requested to take TOEFL, IELTS and MELAB (Michigan English Assessment Battery). Acceptable TOEFL scores are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. A score of 7 or higher on either the academic paper and pencil test or the academic computer-based test in IELTS is acceptable for admission. The minimum required MELAB score is 82.
