This program prepares students for a broad range of careers associated with the design and implementation of mechanical systems and with the conversion, transmission, and utilization of energy. It's courses provide breadth in the discipline include design, dynamics, engineering materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, systems analysis and design, and associated laboratories. Large and well-equipped laboratories in experimental stress analysis, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, engines, hydraulics, instrumentation, and automotive emissions support the mechanical engineering program. The Machine Design specialty emphasizes design of engineering components, subsystems and/or systems. Some of the basic elements of the design process are the establishment of clear objectives, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation. Thus, a designer works under constraints, taking into account economic, health and safety, social and environmental factors, codes of practice and applicable laws.

Students must have strong high school preparation that includes the following course work for freshman admission: English: 3 years; Mathematics: Algebra - 2 years, Geometry - 1 year, Trigonometry - 1/2 year; Science: Lab Science: 1 year must be Chemistry or Physics (both recommended), scores from TOEFL (for international students from non-English speaking native), the SAT or ACT. They are encouraged to complete science, mathematics and English courses beyond these minimum requirements.
