This program provides an opportunity to combine a general education with professional preparation for nursing. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the Connecticut State Board of Nurse Examiners. The curriculum requires four academic years. Upon successful completion of the program, students receive the bachelor of science degree and are eligible for examination for licensure as registered nurses. The objectives of this program are to synthesize knowledge from the arts, sciences, humanities, and the discipline of nursing into the practice of nursing; demonstrate professional comportment and related skills needed to practice artfully, responsibly and accountably within caring, legal, ethical and professional parameters; evaluate personal systems in relation to those values espoused by the profession at large; design, organize and/or deliver health care for individuals, families and/or community using all ways of knowing; demonstrate initiative and self-direction generated by a spirit of inquiry with integrity; compassionately address human, fiscal and physical resource demands for provision of health care; formulate and articulate a philosophy of nursing that incorporates praxis, caring and knowing; collaborate with appropriate others to advocate for and to optimize the health of all members of society by responding to emerging health care challenges; think, reason, and competently and confidently select or create solutions to health care challenges. The urban service track is designed to produce a cadre of well qualified health care professionals committed to serving Connecticut’s urban underserved populations. As Urban Health Scholars, participants represent a select group of students enrolled in the University of Connecticut Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine and Dental Medicine.

Students must have completed at least fifteen secondary school units in college preparatory work, included must be: four years of English; two years of algebra; one year of chemistry with a laboratory; one year of history; an additional year of history or a social science; two years in a single foreign language, a biology course, and a physics course. Three years of the same foreign language is strongly recommended (students with two years in the same foreign language will be required to complete one year of intermediate study in the language at the University, in effect, either extending the program an additional year or utilizing summer school). The minimum score requirement for the TOEFL is 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79 (Internet-based). The minimum score requirement for the IELTS exam is 6.5.
