This program is unique among Michigan's colleges and universities. It is designed to prepare teachers to face the technological challenges of the 21st century by preparing students to teach in both Social Studies and some area of science or mathematics. The Social Studies Education program at Michigan Tech requires students to: develop a strong content foundation in the Social Studies; be cognizant with and competent in the instructional uses of a wide range of educational technology; be qualified through training in a minor to also teach in one of the natural sciences or in mathematics as a minor field; successful graduates of this program will achieve Michigan RX certification and are qualified to teach in secondary schools in any of the four basic Social Studies fields: History, Government, Geography, and Economics. In addition, graduates will also be qualified to teach in at least one field of science or mathematics. Because we want the highest quality students in this program, academic requirements for students pursuing the Social Studies Education Option in Michigan Tech's Department of Social Sciences are higher than for the Department's other degree options.

स्थानबारे जानकारी
The Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Tech differs in important ways from the departments that offer social sciences courses in many other universities. The most obvious difference is the grouping of scholars from anthropology, archaeology, history, sociology, geography, political science, and science and technology studies within a single department. The other basic difference has been the efforts over the past twenty years to develop a faculty with a research orientation toward science and technology within society. Both of these patterns are a reflection of the engineering and science bent of Michigan Tech, a situation that also has helped shape the various missions to which this department is committed.
