This degree is highly respected as leaders in research and service as it relates to preparing future teachers, and the graduates hold teaching positions across the globe. It is proudly and confident because of the foundation they received at Southern Miss. This licensure track program leads to licensure in mild/moderate disabilities (K-12) in the state of Mississippi. The special education undergraduate program requires preparation in mild/moderate disabilities as well as study in two additional areas of emphasis.

Students should have an official high school transcript, which lists the date of graduation, class rank and grade point average, and which indicates credit in the following College Preparatory Core (CPC) units in grades 9-2: four units of English; three units of mathematics; three units of sciences; three units of social studies; two units of required electives; 1/2 unit of computer application. International students should have a minimum TOEFL score of at least 527 on the paper-based, 97 on the computer-based or 71 on the internet-based or a score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required. The TOEFL requirement may be waived if the student satisfies one of the following: student has graduated from a high school in the U.S. with attendance in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades with a minimum grade of C in all of their English courses; has completed a secondary school in which English is the language of instruction, in a country where English is the native language (such as U.K., Canada, Australia), with a minimum grade equivalent to a C in all of their English courses and with attendance in the final three years offered; has completed a secondary international school (such as the International Baccalaureate, e.g., or an American high school abroad) in which English is the language of instruction, with a minimum grade equivalent to a C in all of their English courses and with attendance in the final three years offered; has attended the Southern Miss English Language Institute, has earned a Proficiency or 2 on the ELI Proficiency battery, and has the recommendation of the ELI manager and has an SAT verbal score of 480 or an ACT English score of 20.
