This is a professionally oriented university/conservatory program for students who seek careers as actors. Designed to prepare students for classical and contemporary theatre, the curriculum is fundamentally craft-based, offering rich and intensive courses in voice, speech and movement as well as acting. Rigorous instruction is also provided in verse drama, acting styles, audition technique, singing and dialects. The faculty is comprised of nationally and internationally recognized working professionals who bring their talents, skills, and experience to the classroom. Actor Training Program students must also complete the general education curriculum required of all University of Utah undergraduates and a well-rounded core of non-performance theatre classes including theatre history, dramatic literature, scenography, stage management and directing. Because of these demanding requirements, students who successfully complete this program must be motivated, committed, and dedicated, as well as talented.

Applicants for Admission to the Freshman class are required to have graduated or expected to graduate from an accredited high school before entering the University. Applicants are required to submit ACT scores. SAT scores are also accepted, although ACT scores are preferred. Students are urged to take the ACT/SAT near the end of their junior year or early in the senior year of high school. Students not able to take the ACT on a national date may take the Residual ACT through the University of Utah Testing Center. In addition, a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (173 on the computer-based exam or 61 on new iBT exam) is required. International applicants graduating from secondary schools outside the U.S. must have completed all requirements for graduation with satisfactory grades and must have received a diploma or certificate of graduation. In addition, applicants must be eligible for admission to a major University in the country in which they graduated. Applicants may be considered for admission if they have a minimum TOEFL score of 450 (133 on the computer-based exam or 45 on new iBT exam ) and are academically qualified.
