The program in the Journalism and Media Studies Program explore the Metropolitan area from Newark and North Jersey to New York City. The subjects of their stories, documentaries and photo essays range from gospel music to Ramadan to the local face of a presidential campaign. We welcome all students with a passion for telling the true stories of our time.Student work is published in the Newark Metro-a Web magazine devoted to report, essays, poetries, short stories and photography on the metropolitan area by Rutgers-Newark students. We also welcome contributors who live in, work in, or care about Newark and our region.We teach journalism as part of a liberal arts education that blends theory and practices. This courses explore subjects such as the history of journalism, contemporary media, television, and journalism ethics.

Students must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma with required GPA. Regardless of US residency status, an English proficiency examination is required of all students whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language. Students who have achieved a grade of B or better in a college-level English Composition course in residence at an accredited US college are exempt from this requirement. English courses that are designated ESL, non-native, or which require a special support component, as well as courses taken outside the US, is not acceptable. A score of 6 or higher is acceptable for our Newark campus in IELTS. Acceptable scores for all schools except the College of Nursing are 550+ on the paper and pencil test or 79+ on the Internet-based test. For College of Nursing applicants, the acceptable scores are 600+ on the paper and pencil test or 100+ on the Internet-based test. For admission, all applicants must prepare and present a portfolio and a type written statement describing who they are, their experiences in art and life, and their artistic and academic goals for evaluation. at the Rutgers-Newark.For high school students, portfolios should include a minimum of 10 unframed pieces of original artwork, sketchbooks, and/or journals. For transfer students from two- and four- year institutions, portfolios should include work from their college level art and design classes. Their portfolio should demonstrate energy, intelligence, an understanding of composition, and a variety of media, sizes, and styles. Slides of 3-dimensional work are acceptable.
