The mission of Family Studies is to enable families, both as individual units and generally as a social institution to build and maintain systems of action which lead to maturing in individual self formation and to encourage enlightened, cooperative participation in the critique and formation of social goals and means of accomplishing them. The mission of Interior Design is to provide students with the academic preparation for professional practice in both commercial and residential interior design with an additional special emphasis in residential kitchen and bath design.

Approximately 2,000 students live on-campus at UNK in eight traditional residence halls, two Greek complexes, and two apartment-style complexes. The Office of Residential and Greek Life coordinates all campus housing and is dedicated to maintaining an environment conducive to educational and personal development. Each residence hall facility is supervised by a live-in hall director and is staffed by resident advisors who live on each floor. All residence halls feature computer labs with access to the UNK mainframe computer network, lounges, kitchens, laundry facilities, quiet study areas, and recreational space. All rooms are cable ready and provided with basic furnishings, and local phone service. A variety of specific living environment options are available to students, including honors/academic floors, double or single rooms, co-ed by room floors, upperclassmen floors, and Greek fraternity or sorority houses. Smoking is not allowed in the residence halls, however many halls designate an outside area with benches for smoking.
