The Engineering Building houses well-equipped laboratories in electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering and mechanical engineering. The Industrial and Systems Engineering labs are all state-of-the-art: Ergonomics (Human Factors) Laboratory, Manufacturing Laboratory , Measurement and Control Laboratory and Logistics Laboratory.

The majority of rooms at NIU are traditional double rooms. There are also a limited number of single rooms, triples, and suites. Most residents share a double room with one roommate on a coed floor. Residence halls have no curfew; visitation is restricted only on designated floors. All residence halls are smoke free. Coed floors offer alternating rooms for males and females to encourage interaction. Coed living is offered only on floors with separate bath facilities for each gender. Alcohol-free floors prohibit alcohol possession or use by students or their guests regardless of age. Students under 21 are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages anywhere on NIU Campus. All students living in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan. Students may select from gold, platinum or titanium meal plans. The gold Meal Plan has a value of $60 per week. Platinum Meal Plan has a value of $90 per week. Titanium Meal Plan has a value of $110 per week. Room and board rates are calculated by determining the assigned room type and meal plan.
