This program is designed for the student who wants to study mathematics in some depth as preparation for graduate school or a career in mathematics or a related field. This program includes two options: Abstract Mathematics, Mathematical Sciences. This abstract mathematics option is recommended for the student who plans to go on to graduate school in mathematics or a related field. The emphasis of the option is on abstract, rigorous mathematics and on the development of the student’s analytical and creative talents. This mathematical sciences option is recommended for the student who plans to apply mathematics in a nonacademic career. The program has a dual emphasis, focusing on abstract mathematics and its applications.

Students should have strong high school preparatory program of basic academic subjects such as four years of English; three years of mathematics, including intermediate algebra; two years of laboratory science (biological/physical science), out of which three to four years are highly recommended; and three years of social studies. Courses in the fine arts, foreign language, and computer science are highly recommended. They must have obtained SAT or ACT scores. International students must have one of the following requirements: minimum TOEFL score of 61 (internet-based), 500 (paper-based) and 173 (computer-based); IELTS with an overall band score of 5.0; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 90; Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE); Certificate of Completion (English as a Second Language (ESL) level 112).
