The following courses: Math 111 and 112: Calculus I and II, Math 211: Advanced Calculus, Math 250: Foundations of Mathematics, Math 318: Complex Variables, Math 321: Abstract Vector Spaces, Math 411 and 412: Real Analysis I and II, Math 421 and 422 (formerly Math 323 and 324): Abstract Algebra I and II, One of the following graduate sequences: Math 511 and 512: Analysis I and II, Math 521 and 522: Algebra I and II, Math 541 and 542: Topology I and II, One additional graduate sequence from the following: Math 511 and 512: Analysis I and II, Math 515 and 516: Numerical Analysis I and II, Math 521 and 522: Algebra I and II, Math 531 and 532: Graph Theory I and II, Math 535 and 536: Combinatorics I and II, Math 541 and 542: Topology I and II, Math 555 and 556: Ordinary Differential Equations I and II, Math 557 and 558: Partial Differential Equations I and II.

Student should have taken a solid load of the more challenging courses available. Most competitive students will have a B+/A- average or better within a rigorous course of study. SAT I and/or ACT scores are very important but are not the deciding factor. Strong grades in rigorous courses may cause the committee to overlook below average standardized test scores, but high board scores will never make up for an applicant’s weak course selection or grades.
