The option is designed to provide students with the ability to apply social science concepts and approaches to better understand relationships between societies and their bio-physical environment from a sociological perspective. This option has great relevance for sociology students aspiring to careers in natural resource and environmental policy, planning, management, and education, as well as preparation for advanced/graduate programs related to environmental law and environment/natural resource sociology or policy.

Population Trends and Policy (4)plus; SOC 454. Leisure and Culture (4) (SS)plus; SOC 456. Science and Technology in a Social Context (4)plus; SOC 475. Rural Sociology (4); SOC 485. Consensus and Natural Resources (3)plus; SOC 499. Special Topics (related to community and demography) (1-16); SOC 410. Internship Experience (1-4); No more than two of the following elective courses can count towards the option: ANTH 481. Natural Resources and Community Values (3)plus; GEO 420. Geography of Resource Use (3); GEO 423. Land Use (3); PHL 440. Environmental Ethics (3) (HC)plus; PHL 443. World Views and Environmental Values (3) (NC)plus; PS 475. Applicants must have an excellent academic record (a minimum 3. 0 on a 4.0 scale or "B" grade average or equivalent) from an accredited or recognized institution to be admitted to Oregon State University. International students must have the following GPA scores: Paper score of 550; Internet score of 80 (Minimum score of 16 on each section) and IELTS score of 6.5.
