The mission of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is to foster a collaborative learning environment for faculty, students, and colleagues in the community that furthers understanding of the science of communication as well as the scientific bases of clinical practice. They partner with the students in research and clinical endeavors that result in the generation and application of new knowledge. By cultivating critical thinking, advocacy, innovation, and leadership, they enable students to advance scholarship in the field and to provide optimal services to individuals with diverse cultural and communication needs.

Graduate students have the option of living in University-owned housing on South Campus or in off-campus apartments or houses. Apartment-style university housing is available in Slocum Heights on South Campus, about two miles from Main Campus. Free shuttle bus service is available. These apartments are furnished, utilities are included, and one communications fee covers phone, cable and internet service. Apartment layouts, virtual tours, and associated costs are all available on the University's Housing. There are also numerous apartment complexes and rental houses that the graduate students choose to live in. Many are within walking distance or on the bus line.
